Jesus, Can You Do That Again? Here?

Jesus, Can You Do That Again? Here?

While I was in Hot Springs, Arkansas, I young man came to our church because he had to do community service for the courts. Occasionally, we would have a request like that. We would always find some cleaning or other tasks for people, but we would also start their time in a short Bible study.

I met with Dylan and gave him some instruction on journaling. I asked him to read John 1, then gave him some time on his own. When I came back to see how he was doing, he hadn't written anything down. At first, I wondered if he didn't understand what I had asked him to do. Then, I noticed he wasn't on John 1 any longer. I asked Dylan if he'd been reading the whole time I was gone. He had. He was on John 4, but he said he hadn't found the end of the chapter yet.

Dylan had heard the Bible quoted, but he had never read from a Bible before. He was expecting a page break like you'd find in a novel. He didn't know the big numbers within the text were "chapters." That was the start of a new journey for Dylan. Several months later, I had the privilege of baptizing Dylan into the Christian faith.

Join me in praying that God would bring some Dylans to Calvary. Pray that God would allow us to walk alongside the people in San Lorenzo he desires to draw into this faith. Pray that God would reveal our insider language (even things as simple as "chapters" and "verses") and give us grace to teach our neighbors what we know.

This Lent, we focus on prayer. Let's pray to our God, that he would change us, for the good our neighbors. Let's pray to meet someone like Dylan.

here for you,

Matt Behrens, Pastor
