A Word From Preschool

As I write this article for the February Chronicle it is January and the students and teachers are back from sharing the joy of Christmas with our families.

Parents, teachers, staff and students have hit the ground running as the New Year starts with a whirl wind of academic activities to complete. Thought provoking, fascinating discoveries lie awaiting us in our curriculum.

This brings us to the great time the preschoolers and teachers are having in Preschool. God has provided us with excellent examples of weather to study. We love to study weather. The students and teachers alike have such a good time exploring, problem solving and using teamwork to understand and learn about weather. We will study how animals survive and live in different types of weather. We will study hibernation, camouflage and adaption of animals in weather.

Our week of studying Ice, Snow and Cold Weather has had perfect weather conditions to use as examples. Parents didn't seem as pleased as us with the brisk, freezing wind and rain. And it is true that the students did not seem to spend much time playing with the large ice sculptures and cubes in the water table until they have defrosted their frozen faces and hands upon entering the class in the mornings. We are now studying Rainbows and clouds. To this end we will observe, describe and record some basic properties of water, its presence and effects in the physical world. We will demonstrate knowledge of the element of water in the material world in the state of rain, and link it to weather conditions. We will use dice to make rainbows by using math skills .We will make rainbows using crayons, watercolors, mirrors and the sun on water, and paper confetti.

We will admire, count and identify different types of clouds in our sky.We will talk about God's Promise. We will explore all the beautiful colors of the rainbow and how they are made. Have you ever seen a beautiful ice rainbow? We will admire, count and identify different types of clouds in our sky.

The next week is Thunder and Lightening Week. We discuss how to get over weather fears. We measure water and listen to Thunder. We use math skills to make Thunder cake.   The last week in January our weather unit focus is on wind and clouds. To the study of wind we add bubbles. If someone has a small plastic wading pool to donate and we have good weather, we will be able to make incredible "over a preschooler and up bubbles".

Happy Valentine's Day to all of you.

I recorded the answers that our preschoolers gave during a religion lesson and wish to share them with you as part of our Happy Valentine Day message to you. I asked them how do you know Jesus loves you and why do you love Him...I hope these warm your heart.

Lorelai Why do I know Jesus loves me?-"He makes sure we have food and grow healthy." I love Him because "He loves everyone no matter what."

Malia B Why do I know Jesus loves me? "He came to be with us at Christmas time." I love Him because "He loves me."

Zanai Why do I know Jesus loves me? "He gives us all the love He has." I love Him because "He is our God!"

Dylan Why do I know Jesus loves me? "He gave us hearts for love."I love Him because "God is one of the "Good Guys""

Kaylah Why do I know Jesus loves me? "He watches over us."

I love Him because "He makes me happy."

Manuel Why do I know Jesus loves me? "He is good to us."

I love Him because "He loves me always."

Savannah Why do I know Jesus loves me? "He listens to my prayers." I love Him because "He made animals, and me and my family."

Anaiya Why do I know Jesus loves me? "We are His children."

I love Him because He made my family, our school and milk."

Jayla Why do I know Jesus loves me? "God gave us Jesus."

I love Him because "He shows us how to pray and be"

Malia K Why do I know Jesus loves me? "He will never leave us!" I love Him because "He is our awesome God!"

Tessa Why do I know Jesus loves me? "We are special to Him."

I love Him because "He made dogs for us."

Josue Why do I know Jesus loves me? "He will always help us."

I love Him because "He gave us rainbows and my family."

Christian Why do I know Jesus loves me? "He made us!"

I love Him because "He is good to us and listens to my prayers."

Cheris Why do I know Jesus loves me? "He loves me."

I love Him because "He is sweet and good."

Laylah Why do I know Jesus loves me? "He loves my mommy."

I love Him because "I like Him."

Naomi Why do I know Jesus loves me? "He died for us to save us."I love Him because "He makes me happy and I like to sing about Him at school and my home. Anywhere!"

The Preschoolers, Ms. Traci and I wish to thank you for all of the many ways you support, help and lift up in prayer our school, teachers and students. When we see or hear something that reminds us of your support it makes us feel energized with the love of Jesus. Thank You Mrs. Vincent

Installation

Calvary members, school family and friends

The elders would like to ask you to set aside January 6th.

Put a mark on your calendar.......Make it a priority.........It's an important day for Calvary.......

We will be welcoming and installing Pastor Kelly Smith as Pastor of Calvary Lutheran Church and School. We all have busy lives, but we feel it very important for us to gather together in celebration of Pastor Smith and his wife Pam's arrival as we partner with them into the next chapter of the life and ministry of Calvary Lutheran Church and School. We have been advised that our District President, Pastor Newton, will be there as well as Pastors from within the District to be part of the celebration. There will also be a time of food and fellowship following the service. Pastor Smith will be leading the 9am service in the morning and the installation service will be at 4pm.

Again, we would strongly encourage you to make this a priority and join in this celebration.

BOARD OF GOVERNANCE

October 18, 2012

Present: Barbara Adams, Sarah Anderson, Darlene Goldhammer, Jeff Jensen, Lee Strom, Elder Dave Mueller

Barbara Adams presented "Keep Moving Forward," a devotion based on Acts 17:28. "Keep Moving Forward." Do you remember receiving your first bicycle?   For many it was difficult to keep the bicycle upright and moving forward, but with the help of family and friends you did eventually manage to do just that. So it is with our Christian life. We never reach a point where we can stop moving forward; our personal relationship with the Lord does not reach a point where we can just "sit on the bicycle." "For in Him we live and move and are." Acts 17:28.

The devotion was followed with prayer by all present.

Minutes of the last meeting were confirmed by email.

BOG then reviewed school information previously provided by Principal Fred Brauer.   Frank Mitchell is in charge of email information for the school; the Marketing Committee has sent another mailing to the immediate area.

Dave Mueller presented a report from the Board of Elders. They will confirm with Pastor Lu that he will continue to serve through the Christmas season. Each of the elders has been assigned to a school classroom to assist families with needs and to reach out to unchurched families. Elders will also follow up on eprayers and quilt requests. Pastor Gary Mohr will be serving our congregation on October 28 while Pastor Lu is on vacation.

Barbara presented an update on the Beautification Committee and the Youth Committee.

Our Direct Missions budget for last year has been paid. We will now be requesting suggestions from the congregation on how to distribute the $10,000 contribution we make each year for Direct Missions.

An elder will read Pastor Kelly Smith's letter to the congregation on Sunday 21. Pastor and Pam will live in the parsonage so the current lease will end December 14. The date for Pastor Smith's installation has not been confirmed, but it will be in early January. All the pastors in the area will be invited.

We continue to seek candidates for BOG.

Next meeting will be Thursday, November 15.

Jeff Jensen closed in prayer

Darlene Goldhammer

November E-Chronicle

NOVEMBER E-Chronicle 2012

This is an exciting time for us.......Christmas will soon be here and then in early January our new Shepherd will arrive. We have been in communication with Pastor Smith and his last sermon in Michigan will be December 2nd.   He has some vacation time left so he is going to take some time in traveling here and said he might be here in time to worship with us on Christmas day. Tentatively he will be installed the first or second Sunday in January. He has made a request of the leaders of Calvary and the members of Calvary to read the book of Nehemiah. Appears that is one of his favorite books of the Bible and will be having a sermon series on it upon his arrival. The Elders hope and pray that Calvary will welcome Pastor Smith with open arms and support him with our God given talents.
The Elders are leaning towards waiting for Pastor Smith to be on board before we start any new Bible Class series or to change our worship schedule.
We are really excited to see what God has in store for us. The world we are living in presents many challenges that are in contradiction to what God desires for his creation and those he created. There are so many things that are drawing people away from worship and carrying out the plan that God established for Calvary over 60 years ago.   Nehemiah rallied the children of Israel to rebuild the wall....working together.....overcoming criticism and challenge and fighting off discouragement.   Can you just imagine what God can do through Calvary if we all work together?????

                            ************

A word from Pastor Kelly Smith...

In November we are giving Thanks to God for the Call we have received to serve and lead the people of Calvary in proclaiming the Good News!  And as the Passover feast ends with the words "Next year in Jerusalem," we look forward to celebrating Thanksgiving "Next year in San Lorenzo!"

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Kelly
THIS & THAT

Dear Christian Friends,
All of us would like to thank all of you for the prayers and kind support given to our family over the past few months. It was challenging at times to care for our parents, but God has blessed us as a family through this journey and taught us many lessons. This "season of loss and mourning" has been much easier to go through thanks to love of friends like you! We so   appreciate all of the food donated to the funeral receptions for both Dad and Mom. It was wonderful to celebrate their lives with so many friends and family members! God is good and we rejoice at His abundant love as demonstrated to us by so many people during this journey. Thank you all for your great kindness!

Life in 3rd & 4th Grade at CLS

Dear Members of Calvary Church and School,
Life in 3rd and 4th grade is challenging yet exciting all at the same time. All the students are working very hard and are having an awesome time in school! One of our favorite things is meeting with our kindergarten reading buddies every week and reading and playing with them.
The 3rd graders are working hard on learning cursive, memorizing math facts, writing stories and good paragraphs, and lots of reading! The 4th graders are super busy learning to write longer paragraphs and stories, reading more, and practicing and reviewing our multiplication facts by being timed every day.
A few things we have learned about this year is: Canada, the skeletal system, reading and making maps, our ears, important rivers around the world, the parts of the Bible, the Trinity, who God is, what it means to be a Christian, and tools we use to study to the Bible. We are also getting ready to write and illustrate our very own book!

I asked the students what they loved about Calvary Lutheran School and this is what they have to say!

4th Grade
Devon: "We have the best status of learning."
Felipe: "We get to learn a lot of neat and interesting things."
Danika: "I get to meet new friends and learn about God!"

3rd Grade
Kylie: "There are GREAT teachers!"
Bethany: "It is a really fun place! It is 5 Star School!"
Ryan: "You can go to church during the week and you can praise God every day!"
Destiny: "There are great teachers who make learning fun!"
Riley: "IT'S AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I MEAN IT IS A 5 STAR SCHOOL!!!!!"
Tyanna: "Miss Grace is the funniest teacher in the world, there are great teachers, and I get to go to chapel every Wednesday!"
Ethan: "There are lots of fun surprises like field trips, free dress, book fairs, etc."
Kyle: "I am learning so much! I learn about God every day! I am going to be President thanks to Calvary!"
Apolonia: "Calvary Lutheran School is awesome because you get to learn about God."
AprilMarie: "We have great teachers and PE is a blast! Mr. Souza has the best PE classes ever!"
Alejandra: "You get to learn so many different things! My favorite is learning math."

There are always fun and exciting things going on in our classroom. We thank you for your prayers and support as we continue to learn and grow in our studies and faith.

 God's Blessings,
Miss Grace and the Third and Fourth Grade Class
