The Experience

BOARD OF GOVERNANCE

June 21, 2012

Present: Barbara Adams, Sarah Anderson, Darlene Goldhammer, Jeff Jensen, Lee Strom, Guest: Principal Fred Brauer

Barbara Adams opened with a devotion based on II Cor. 6:16b-7:1. We often think attitude is not all that important and that we are just "going through a phase." Think of it as going through a mud puddle. When you step into such a puddle, how long do you plan to stay?   Do you want to wallow in it and feel sorry for yourself, wondering whether God cares?  That can happen on occasion before we are even aware we are wallowing. We need to go to the Lord frequently, allowing Him to empty our mud puddles and making ourselves available for whatever He has in mind.

Minutes from the May 10 meeting were confirmed by e-mail.

Principal Fred Brauer presented an update on our school. This included charts on enrollment per grade and the impact on finances by offering discounts to those who paid for the entire school year last spring. He also presented information on the summer school enrichment programs and daycare. In the upcoming school year, Spanish will be offered in additional grades. Fred also presented info on the WASC report, Cougar Parents' Association (CPA), formation of a School Committee, new efforts to collect past due tuition and other areas on which he is working.

The Elder Report from Dave Mueller stated that the Call Committee is waiting to hear from District regarding potential names to consider for our pastor replacement. We will have a visiting pastor on June 24, since Pastor Werth will be out of town. During the month of June, elders provided in-home communion for five members.

The newly established Care Committee will meet with Barbara Adams to establish guidelines for the program. The committee members are Cindy Schultz and Dianne Flynn.

Treasurer Jeff Jensen stated that work on the budget for the next year is getting underway. Reports are being sent to each group in charge of budget funds showing their expenditures according to the budget up to this time.

Barbara Adams asked for each existing committee (Publicity, Care, Beautification, and Youth) to provide a brief monthly summary on a regular basis for BoG.

Three BoG members' two-years term of service will end soon. They may choose to run for re-election or not. The three members are Darlene Goldhammer, Jeff Jensen and Lee Strom.

Meeting ended with prayer by Barbara Adams.

Next meeting July 12, 2012

Report from Call Committee

We have sent questionnaires to two candidates asking for some additional information. As soon as we receive this info we will arrange for phone calls to get to know each other a little better. The names of the two candidates are Rev Kelly Smith Sr. pastor at St Marks in Brooklyn, MI and Shawn Nettelton, Associate Pastor at Christ Lutheran, Orland Park, IL.   We will wait and decide whether we will recommend asking the Pastors to come to California.

You are invited to join in a Bible discussion group starting up again on September 9, 2012

We will be looking at 12 books of the Old Testament including Psalms, Proverbs, Esther, Song of Solomon plus some of the minor Prophets. What we do is read an assigned number of Psalms/chapters during the week and then get together on Sunday mornings to discuss. Some just listen....some talk....but we all get something new each week. If you think you'd like to come you will need to read the book of Esther before September 9th and then come and be a part of this group in the Library.

Love For Heroes-

I want to update you on the Love For Heroes program.  In June we shipped boxes to two service members and in July we shipped packages to two additional service persons.  Thanks to your generosity we were able to fill the boxes with lots of nourishing  snacks, toiletries, books & games.  Additionally, the cost of mailing the boxes was fully funded. Our plan is to ship a box to each service member every three months for as long as they are deployed.  The people who received boxes in June will receive their next box in September and so on.  We will be asking you for donations again, as the need arises.  Please submit names of service members whenever you become aware of their need.   Thank you so much for your contributions and to the folks who helped pack the boxes and especially for your prayers for this program and for our service members.

BOARD OF GOVERNANCE

May 10, 2012

Present: Barbara Adams, Sarah Anderson, Darlene Goldhammer, Jeff Jensen, Lee Strom

Barbara Adams opened with a devotion based on Matt. 11:28, "Come to Me all who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest." Many events in life are limited to a certain number of people such as a Super Bowl or a Presidential State Dinner, but Jesus reaches out to all who are weary and burdened. He meets us where we are in our dark places and can transform us in our understanding. When we let our Savior's word touch us, we will be lifted up.

We have a real burden for our school and church but we need to rest in His arms and in His will.   He knows our motives and is aware that we have decisions to make about our school and church. We need to seek the Lord and ask for His help. Our path may not be easy but the Lord will guide us in the way He wants us to go.   When we make our decisions based on prayer and the word, He will make His way known to us. All present joined in prayer.

Minutes from April 26, 2012, were confirmed by email.

We reviewed the upcoming Call Meeting and the procedure to be followed. It was confirmed that all those voting must have signed the constitution 90 days prior to the meeting, and that it will take a 2/3 majority to select a candidate. The actual voting will be handled as in our past several elections. Barbara Goldhammer will be in charge of the ballots. Voters will sign in, receive a ballot, vote and deposit the ballot in the box. If one candidate receives the needed number of votes, he will be called to see if he still wishes to consider the call; if he declines at that point, we can reconsider the second person. Pastor Dave Sauer, our Circuit Councilor will be present.

On May 27 we will vote on Bill Sandau to serve as an additional member of the Elder Board.

Paul Schultz has agreed to serve as a member of the Youth Committee one Sunday per month. A meeting for the group will take place in the near future.

Jeff reviewed the financial picture and indicated that after eight month (end of April) we are even financially.

Principal Fred Brauer has met with the staff regarding the next school year. He also provided information about aggressive marketing plans. The Cougar Parents Association will have a joint meeting with BoG members the week of May14. BoG will provide Fred with names of people who are interested in serving on a School Committee.

BoG will meet next on June 21. The meeting adjourned with prayer.

Respectfully submitted,

Darlene Goldhammer,

BoG Secretary

CALL MEETING

May 13, 2012

President Barbara Adams called the meeting to order.

Elder Hank Blank opened with prayer.

Pastor Dave Sauer, Circuit Counselor presented a devotion based on John 15. In that section of scripture Jesus says that "you did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will prosper. "We are in the process of calling someone to serve as our pastor. We want it to be someone the Lord chooses for us. While we may hope for a pastor who "walks on water," we also know such a person doesn't exist. Let us hope then to reflect the Lord's choice as we seek to select a pastor who will form a partnership with us. Pastor ended with prayer.

Pastor Sauer then explained the voting process and the need for a 2/3 vote in favor of one candidate. The end desire is to declare a unanimous vote for that person.

Dave Mueller, Chairman of the Call Committee, introduced the other members of the committee who are Abby Einspahr, Steve Ellis, Rick English. Andy Glock and Darlene Goldhammer. Dave then explained the steps the committee went through in arriving at the two names being presented.

The voters had opportunities to speak and ask questions. Pastor prayed that the Lord's choice be selected. Voters signed in at the ballot box, received ballots and voted. Barbara Goldhammer was in charge of ballot distribution.   The ballot count showed that neither candidate had received the required two-thirds majority. More time was spent on questions and comments followed by a second round of voting. The second vote also ended without a clear winner.

President Barbara Adams and Pastor Sauer said they would contact each man to see if he was still open to a call. Dave stated that there was a web site for Meyer but not Puls. Pastor Sauer reminded us that if we choose to get a new list of candidates it would be a minimum of 2-3 months before we can call a pastor.

Meeting adjourned,

Darlene Goldhammer

UPDATE ON CALL PROCESS

As most of you are aware, we were unable to come to a 2/3 majority at the call meeting on May 13th. It has now come to our attention that the new by-laws have not yet been approved by the District, meaning that we are still bound by our old by-laws. The old by-laws require just a simple majority.   A call to the two pastors letting them know it was our intent to have another call meeting was cut short when the first pastor called said he would no longer be willing to consider a call. It is, and always has been, a desire to come to the congregation with at least 2 candidates. So we will request additional names from the District President. If you have any new names to suggest to be considered, please submit them to the church office before June 15th.   Please keep this in prayer......God is in control.

LOVE FOR HEROES

The LWML members of Calvary have committed to a project to support our military personnel serving overseas, by sending periodic `care' packages. We invite members of Calvary and Calvary Lutheran School to submit request forms for their loved ones overseas. We will prepare and ship boxes as long as the individual is deployed.

We can't do this alone, we need your help. First and foremost, we need your prayers - for the men and women who graciously serve our country. Please pray also that the Lord would bless this ministry, helping us serve and support our military overseas.

Of course, if we're going to send boxes, we need goods to fill the boxes. Attached is a list of the items that might be included. A box will be located in both the narthex and the administration building for your contributions. If you have any access to merchants or distributors, who would be interested in donating items we would appreciate their support also. Product donations are tax deductible.

If you'd prefer to make monetary donations you can do so by writing a check payable to Calvary Lutheran Church and specifying Love for Heroes. These donations are tax deductible. We will use the funds to purchase items for the boxes as well as paying the postage. Postage on the boxes is $13.

We would also like to include personal greetings from members in the boxes. You can write a note and place it in the donation box to be included in the care package. We are hoping that the school students will also be writing letters.
Suggested Items

Dear Members of Calvary,

It's been a joy working with the people of Calvary for the past 3 weeks and   l'm looking forward to our continued association in the work of our Lord at Calvary. As your   vacancy pastor I want to learn all of your names, but this will take time. In the mean time, don't feel bad when I have to ask you to repeat your name. Eventually I'll learn. It will just take repetition.

In my three weeks with you I've seen that Calvary is truly a great congregation with lots of potential in working for our Lord in his Kingdom. As a vacancy pastor I'm limited in what I can do, but I will be working with your Board of Governance and your Elders in leading and guiding them in expanding our Lord's Kingdom at Calvary. We need to find more ways of sharing the message of John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." in our community. If you have any ideas or thoughts on this matter I'd appreciate hearing from you.

In Christ's Service and Yours,

Pastor Luther Werth

 BOARD OF GOVERNANCE

April 11, 2012

Present: Barbara Adams, Sarah Anderson, Darlene Goldhammer Jeff Jensen, Lee Strom, Dave Mueller

Barbara Adams opened with a devotion based on Romans 8:28, "And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." NKJV She emphasized that God does work every single happening in our lives for good, including the obviously good things and the not-so- good situations with which we struggle. We must look to Him for the answers to all our "what about?" questions. We followed with a time of prayer by each member.

ELDER REPORT

Elder Dave Mueller presented the following information from the Elder Board. The Call Committee is now down to two potential pastoral candidates for our vacancy. May 13 has been tentatively set as the date for a Call Meeting.

The Elders will meet with Pastor Werth, our vacancy pastor as of May 8, regarding setting up worship for one service each Sunday starting May 13. Consideration is being given to a congregational mailing at a cost of $40 to be sure all are aware of the change in service time. Easter services had an attendance of 250 compared to 200 in 2011; there were 40 children present compared to 18 in 2011.

OLD BUSINESS

BOG will assist the Youth Committee in setting up the definition of a responsible adult to determine the qualifications for those who will be assisting our youth leaders, as well as a job description for our Youth Committee members. Our Youth Committee consists of Rick and Annette English, Toni Troya, and Gina Gerome. One of the committee's responsibilities will be to assure the presence of responsible adults at all youth activities to support the leaders. Brian Pye, youth leader, will also provide the committee a calendar of events each month. He will also put the calendar in the Chronicle each month.

NEW BUSINESS

We welcomed our new member Sarah Anderson. She will be learning the financial aspects, the accounting methods and the treasurer's responsibility at CLC, but Jeff will continue as treasurer, Barbara will continue as president and Darlene as secretary. BOG will change its name to BoG. We received eight responses of help from our "How Can I Help? Questionnaire" distributed at our congregational meeting. Principal Fred Brauer is being asked to provide a written report on the steps the Marketing Committee has taken and will take in preparation for the 2012 school year.

We have not yet received the final report from WASC but we discussed some of the findings of which we were aware. Most importantly, we must establish a six-year long-term master plan (Growth Area Action Plan) so that all stakeholders will have increased awareness and input into resource planning, growth and Christian outreach into our community. Jeff closed the meeting with prayer. The next meeting will be Wednesday, April 25, at 7:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Darlene Goldhammer, BoG Secretary

BOARD of GOVERNANCE

April 26, 2012

Present: Barbara Adams, Sarah Anderson, Darlene Goldhammer, Jeff Jensen, and Lee Strom

Barbara Adams led a devotion called "Vision," based on Gen. 28:12-13.   This is the story of Jacob's dream about the stairway to heaven with the angels ascending and descending. In order to grow we must have vision or dreams. God has dreams for us as individuals and as a congregation, and we are trying to live out those dreams as church members and as leaders. It is a great blessing to have your life lived for something bigger than yourself. Things that are less important so easily sidetrack us.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Jeff Jensen is meeting regularly with Brian Pye, Youth Leader, to work out the details of Brian's job. Brian will be putting weekly information in the Cross Connection and monthly items in the Chronicle; on the Internet he will also list parents' names and addresses of students who attend the youth activities.   Brian is getting a schedule of DCE/Youth Director meetings for this District. He should attend all the monthly meetings if possible.

Our Youth Committee is made up of Annette and Rick English, Toni Troya and Gina Gerome. We are waiting to hear from one other person who is considering being on the committee. BoG has given the committee guidelines on which to base their job description they will write and return to BoG.

The Board of Elders is currently working out the format for the summer services. The praise band will be playing once a month. Dave Mueller and the Board of Elders will meet with Pastor Werth.

NEW BUSINESS

We discussed our current financial situation. The Beautification Committee provided a list of the areas they are reviewing in determining top priorities. Cindy Schultz and Diane Flynn have agreed to serve on the Care Committee.

We reviewed reports prepared by Principal Fred Brauer on the School Marketing Committee, what they have completed this school year and goals for the future. We also reviewed information provided by Fred on where the school enrollment is at the moment and the numbers projected for fall.

Barbara Adams closed with prayer. The next meeting will be May 10 at 7 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Darlene Goldhammer, BoG Secretary
